הַכַּפְתֹּרִים מִכַּפְתֹּר (the Kaftorim from Kaftor) — Kaftor is almost certainly Crete or the Aegean coastlands, the ancestral homeland of the Philistines (cf. Amos 9:7; Jer. 47:4). This aside quietly anticipates the Philistine occupation of the coastal plain: the very people who will become Yisra'el's most tenacious adversaries in the days of the Judges and the early monarchy were themselves divine instruments who had displaced an earlier indigenous people. YHWH's sovereign redistribution of land runs deeper than any single people's narrative. FOG preserves the Hebrew transliterations; FOG Message uses the conventional English forms.
