This verse opens a comprehensive catalogue of prohibited occult practices spanning vv. 10–11. *Qōsēm qəsāmîm* (קֹסֵם קְסָמִים) = divination, likely by lots or arrows; *mə'ōnēn* (מְעוֹנֵן) = cloud- or time-watching, reading atmospheric or celestial signs (root possibly *'anan*, cloud); *mənachēsh* (מְנַחֵשׁ) = reading natural omens or serpent-signs; *məkashēph* (מְכַשֵּׁף) = sorcery or potion-craft. The catalogue opens with child sacrifice to Molekh — the most extreme violation first, setting the moral pitch for all that follows. FOG renders each practice functionally ('cloud-reader,' 'interpreter of signs'); FOG Message uses the more conventional 'omens' and 'signs.'
