Footnotes

This verse is the direct source of Yeshua's statement in Mark 14:7, 'The poor you always have with you' — a phrase often misread as fatalistic acceptance of poverty. In its Deuteronomic context it is not a consolation for inaction but a mandate for perpetual generosity: precisely *because* poverty will recur, the command to give must never end. Yeshua's audience, steeped in Torah, would have heard the full force of this passage in His words. The doubled infinitive absolute פָּתֹחַ תִּפְתַּח (*patoach tiftach*) echoes verse 8, forming a literary envelope around the entire passage on care for the poor.
