Israel's own experience of displacement and vulnerability as *gerim* (sojourners) in Mitzrayim becomes the moral foundation for radical hospitality. This is one of the most repeated ethical commands in the Torah — rabbinic tradition counts 36 occurrences of the obligation toward the stranger — suggesting that Israel's perpetual temptation was to forget its own story. The logic is relational and embodied: you know what it is to be foreign; therefore you know what the foreigner needs.
