הִתְגְּזֶרֶת אֶבֶן דִּי-לָא בִידַיִן (hitgezerat even di-la vidayin) = "a stone was cut out, not by hands" — this passive construction with the explicit qualifier "not by hands" is one of the most theologically loaded phrases in Daniel. In the Hebrew prophets, divine action is consistently contrasted with human/manual effort (cf. Isa. 2:8; Zech. 4:6). By the Second Temple period this stone had become a major messianic motif: the anointed deliverer who arrives not by political or military means but by pure divine initiative. The New Testament explicitly identifies it with the Messiah (Matt. 21:44; Luke 20:18), and both versions preserve the phrase intact because its weight cannot be paraphrased away.
