ἅλατι ἠρτυμένος ("seasoned with salt") — salt in the ancient Near East was not merely flavouring but a covenant sign (Num 18:19; 2 Chr 13:5 speak of a "covenant of salt"), a preservative, and a sacrificial ingredient. Speech "salted" implies both preserving covenant-loyalty and giving substance and sting. χάριτι ("grace") can also carry the sense of wit, charm, and social pleasantness — godly speech is simultaneously winsome and weighty.
