σπλάγχνα οἰκτιρμοῦ is literally "bowels of compassion" — the σπλάγχνα (intestines, viscera) were considered the seat of deep feeling in the ancient world, roughly equivalent to what we mean by "the gut." This is visceral, embodied tenderness, not polite sympathy. F.O.G renders it "tender-hearted compassion" to honour the physical register; F.O.G Message uses "heartfelt compassion" for modern accessibility. μακροθυμία ("patient endurance") is literally "long-tempered" — the capacity to bear provocation over a sustained period without retaliating.
