χαρισάμενος (charissamenos) is from χάρις (charis, "grace")—to forgive is literally to "grace" someone, an act of pure gift rather than transaction. The mid-sentence shift from "you" to "us" (ἡμῖν) is striking: Paul folds himself, as a Jew, together with his Gentile readers as equally in need of and equally recipients of this grace.
