Footnotes

ἀρχή (archē, "beginning/first principle") is the opening word of the Torah in the LXX—"ἐν ἀρχῇ" (Genesis 1:1)—and identically the first word of John's prologue. Its use here frames the resurrection as a new-creation event: the same word that launched the first creation now governs the new. As the "Firstborn from the dead," the Messiah is not merely the first person raised—He is the originating source and governing principle of an entirely new order of existence, as ἀρχή was of the first.
