Footnotes
Hekhal carries the double meaning of "temple" and "royal palace" — sacred house and seat of political power together. The FOG renders it "Temple" (the sanctuary that should ring with worship turned to screaming); the FOG Message uses "palace" (the seat of the corrupt royal cult, as at Bethel — explicitly called the king's sanctuary in 7:13). Both meanings were almost certainly audible to Amos's audience. The final word has ("Hush!") is a single jarring command — an abrupt, violent silence imposed over the carnage.
