The entire oracle pivots on an untranslatable Hebrew pun: qayits ("summer fruit") sounds nearly identical to qets ("end"). Amos sees a basket of late-season fruit — and YHWH hears it as a death-knell. Summer is over, the harvest is in, and so is Israel's time. The FOG preserves the literal "summer fruit" so the sonic collision with "end" remains visible. The FOG Message renders the pivot as "the time is ripe," capturing the ripeness-to-ruin logic in English idiom. Neither translation can fully reproduce the wordplay, but both try to honour its devastating rhetorical force.
