Tavita (Aramaic: טַבִיתָא) and Dorcas (Greek: Δορκάς) both mean "gazelle"—Luke gives both names, honouring her bilingual community. μαθήτρια (mathētria) is the feminine form of μαθητής (disciple)—one of only two uses of this feminine form in the entire New Testament, a deliberate signal of Tavita's full standing as a talmid. FOG uses tzedakah for ἐλεημοσυνῶν (eleēmosynōn, almsgiving/charity) because the Hebrew צְדָקָה encompasses both justice and righteous generosity—giving as covenant obligation, not optional philanthropy—a semantic depth that "charity" alone does not carry.
