The Greek χειροποιήτοις (cheiropoiētois, 'made by hands') is a pointed LXX term used specifically for idols (Lev 26:1; Isa 2:18; 46:6). Stephen's deployment implies that a static, exclusivist temple theology had structurally become identical to idolatry—a charge that explains the volcanic fury of his audience in verse 54.
