ηὔξανεν ("kept growing") and ἐπληθύνετο ("was multiplying") are both imperfect tense—conveying continuous, ongoing expansion rather than a single event. The stunning detail is πολύς τε ὄχλος τῶν ἱερέων ("a large crowd of priests")—Jerusalem had thousands of priests, many of lower rank and modest means, perhaps more open to a movement centred on a crucified and risen Messiah. Their conversion would have been theologically explosive to the priestly aristocracy.
