παθητὸς (pathētos), "capable of suffering / passible," appears only here in the New Testament and names the sharpest scandal of early Jewish-Christian proclamation: that God's anointed King was the kind of being who could suffer and die. The opening εἰ is recitative here — introducing the content of prophetic testimony rather than genuine doubt — and both versions translate "must suffer" accordingly. F.O.G Message adds "of salvation" to make audible Paul's allusion to Isaiah 49:6 ("a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth"), a text Paul explicitly cites in Acts 13:47 and almost certainly evokes here.
