The Greek βῆμα (bēma) is a raised platform from which a Roman magistrate delivered official rulings—not merely a chair, but a formalised seat of judicial authority. FOG renders it "tribunal" to evoke the institutional weight of Roman power; FOG Message uses "judgment seat" to preserve the more literal image of an elevated throne of verdict. The word recurs at vv. 10 and 17, and carries a charged theological echo for readers familiar with Paul's own declaration that every person will one day stand before the bēma of the Messiah (2 Cor. 5:10).
