The Greek δεισιδαιμονία (deisidaimonia) sits on a knife-edge between "religion" (neutral or respectful) and "superstition" (dismissive). Festus—a Roman official narrating Jewish affairs to a half-Jewish king—likely uses it neutrally, though with the faint condescension of an outsider surveying a foreign cult. Both versions render it "religion" to honour that ambiguity. What is theologically striking is that Luke carefully puts in a Roman governor's mouth the bare, unadorned skeleton of the apostolic kerygma—death and resurrection—stripping it to its irreducible core and placing it before the most powerful audience yet seen in Acts.
