Footnotes
anastasin nekrōn — "resurrection of the dead" — this is where the speech fractures. Greek thought generally held that the body was either a prison to be escaped at death or simply dissolved; bodily resurrection was philosophically repugnant. The two responses — outright mockery and polite deferral — may map onto the Epicurean and Stoic reactions respectively: Epicureans denied any meaningful afterlife; Stoics believed the soul was reabsorbed into the cosmic divine fire.
