to theion — "the divine nature/divinity" — Paul adopts Greek philosophical vocabulary rather than his usual theos, speaking from within their framework to expose its internal contradiction: if we are God's living offspring — thinking, moving, breathing — God cannot be less than we are. He cannot be inert matter. Paul uses Stoic premises to demolish Stoic and popular religious idolatry simultaneously.
