"Proseuché" — while often rendered "place of prayer," this term in diaspora Jewish usage designated either a formal synagogue building or a simpler open-air gathering site. Philippi's Jewish population was likely too small to constitute a formal synagogue (which required a minimum of ten Jewish men), explaining both the riverside location and the predominantly female gathering—a detail Luke preserves with quiet sociological accuracy.
