ἐξέστησαν (exestēsan, "were astonished/stood outside themselves") — the verb existēmi is the verbal form of ekstasis (v.10), meaning to be "stood outside" of oneself in shock or wonder. Luke may be drawing a deliberate echo: just as Peter was taken "outside himself" in a trance to receive the vision, the Jewish believers are now taken "outside themselves" in astonishment to witness its fulfilment. The vision and its enactment share the same vocabulary of holy disruption.
