σημεῖον ("mark/sign") here echoes σημειοῦσθε ("mark that person") in v.14, forming a closing literary bracket. Paul's own handwritten mark is the legitimate, authenticating "sign" of apostolic authority — a direct response to the forged letters mentioned in 2:2. The physical act of taking the pen signals the entire letter's authority. Both versions bring out the authentication function, but F.O.G Message makes this explicit with "authenticating mark."
