*She'ol* (שְׁאוֹל) is the Hebrew underworld—not hell in the later Christian sense, but the shadowy realm of the dead, conceived as a pit beneath the earth that reaches up to claim the living. FOG retains *She'ol* as a transliteration to preserve its cosmological personality. FOG Message uses 'the grave' as the most accessible English equivalent, though this loses She'ol's quasi-animate quality as an active, grasping force.
