David's instructions are a masterclass in strategic deception deployed against deception. Hushai will tell Absalom exactly what Absalom wants to hear, in the exact form of words a defecting loyalist would use — while remaining wholly loyal to David. The verb *hafarta* ('you will foil / overturn') uses the same root as David's prayer in verse 31 (*hafer*). David is the instrument of his own answered prayer; YHWH's sovereignty and human agency are woven together without tension.
