Aloga ('without logos/reason') is a pointed irony — these teachers, who traffic in sophisticated-sounding words, are bereft of logos, the very divine Reason underlying creation (cf. John 1:1). They are inferior even to the 'voiceless animal' of verse 16, which at least spoke when God required it. Phthora means both moral corruption and physical destruction/decay, enabling wordplay: they corrupt others and will themselves be corrupted; they destroy and will be destroyed.
