"ἀρετῇ" (aretē) — moral excellence or virtue — is the standard word in Greek philosophical ethics for praiseworthy character; its pairing here with "δόξῃ" (glory) as attributes of God Himself is striking and unusual. The F.O.G renders "moral excellence" to preserve the ethical register; the F.O.G Message uses "excellence" for broader resonance. The dative "ἰδίᾳ δόξῃ καὶ ἀρετῇ" is legitimately ambiguous — instrumental ("by His own glory") or directional ("to His own glory") — and the two versions deliberately take one reading each.
