He works from a personal encounter with Jesus first, then draws on the scholarship of respected Jewish and Christian scholars — because the church was Jewish before it was anything else, and those roots change everything about how you read Scripture.

*Lechem bikkurim* (לֶחֶם בִּכּוּרִים) — 'bread of the first-fruits' — is grain consecrated to YHWH before the general harvest could be consumed (cf. Lev. 23:10; Num. 18:12–13). That it is brought to Elisha rather than a priest suggests he functions as surrogate for a broken Levitical system in the northern kingdom. Twenty loaves for one hundred men—a fivefold shortfall—sets up the miracle to follow. FOG renders *bikkurim* explicitly as 'first-fruits'; FOG Message preserves 'firstfruits' in standard American English.
