The Hebrew *matsevah* (standing-stone/pillar) was a cultic monument common in ancient Canaan, used to mark the presence of a deity. Jehoram's removal of the Baal pillar signals a partial reform—a step away from his parents' thoroughgoing Baalism—but not a wholehearted return to YHWH. FOG uses 'standing-pillar' to retain the concrete, material sense of *matsevah*; FOG Message uses 'sacred pillar' to capture its cultic weight for modern readers.
