He who poured water on the hands of Elijah' is a servant idiom describing Elisha's role as Elijah's personal attendant—in the ancient Near East, pouring water over a master's hands before meals was the duty of a devoted household servant. The phrase identifies Elisha not primarily by his own prophetic credentials but by his posture of humble service to his master. The paradox is intentional: it is precisely this servant relationship that qualifies him as Elijah's true successor. The pattern anticipates Yeshua's/Jesus' inversion of greatness in Mark 10:43–44—the one who serves is the one who leads.
