*Qedeshim* (masc. pl. of *qadesh*) are literally "consecrated/set-apart ones"—but set apart for cultic sexual service. The term is a bitter irony: the same root as *qadosh* (holy). These were not merely cult prostitutes but persons formally dedicated to Canaanite fertility deities, operating inside YHWH's own House. The women weaving *battim* ("houses" or woven coverings) for the Asherah pole suggests an organised cultic industry embedded within the Temple precincts. FOG preserves the Hebrew term; FOG Message renders it descriptively as "shrine workers."
