Salt in the ancient Near East was the element of preservation, purity, and covenant — not primarily a cleanser but a covenant-seal (cf. Leviticus 2:13, 'the salt of the covenant of your Elohim'; Numbers 18:19, 'a covenant of salt'). The new bowl — unused and uncorrupted — paired with covenantal salt enacts a symbolic renewal from the source. Elisha does not heal by his own power but by YHWH's declarative word proclaimed over the waters, a prophetic-priestly act that foreshadows the ministry of One who would one day command the wind and the waves and restore life where death had taken root.
