*Merkavat-esh* (מֶרְכְּבַת אֵשׁ) — 'chariot of fire' — is the vehicle of divine glory, and the word *merkavah* would later become the centerpiece of the most intense strand of Jewish mysticism (cf. Ezekiel 1). Fire throughout Scripture marks the immediate, unmediated presence of YHWH: the burning bush, Sinai, the pillar of fire, and ultimately the tongues of flame at Shavu'ot. The *se'arah* — the violent storm-wind — is the same phenomenon from which YHWH answers Iyov out of the whirlwind (Job 38:1), the most direct mode of divine encounter. This is not merely a supernatural exit; it is a theophanic throne-room arrival.
