Footnotes
Hezekiah's theology is surgically precise: the Assyrians *could* destroy the gods of the nations because those gods were not real — they were *ma'aseh yedei ha'adam* ('the work of human hands'), made of wood and stone (cf. Isa. 44:9-20; Ps. 115:4-8). The implicit argument to YHWH is devastating in its simplicity: *You* cannot be destroyed, because You were not made. The prayer turns Sennacherib's own boast into a theological reductio ad absurdum.
