Sukkot-Benot ('Booths of the Daughters') is otherwise unknown, possibly related to Babylonian sacred rites or a form of Marduk worship. Nergal was the Mesopotamian god of the underworld and pestilence, worshipped at Cuthah—fittingly, a deity of death for a people living under judgment. Ashima is an unidentified Syrian deity, possibly a local storm or healing god. The catalogue of foreign gods (vv. 30–31) functions as a theological roll call: every empire contributes its deities to defile the land YHWH called His own possession.
