מֵעַל פָּנָיו (*me'al panav*, 'from before His face/presence') is the language of expulsion from the divine presence, echoing—with devastating theological weight—the exile of Adam and Eve from the garden, who are sent out 'from before the face of YHWH' (Gen. 3:24; cf. Cain's lament, 4:14, 16). The political exile is simultaneously a cosmic undoing: Israel is expelled from the land of YHWH's presence as humanity was expelled from the garden. That Judah alone remains—itself under prophetic indictment—sets the stage for the next century of southern history.
