Sela (*ha-Sela'*, 'the Rock') is almost certainly the site later known as Petra, the rose-red cliff city carved into the sandstone mountains of Edom in modern Jordan. Its renaming to Yokte'el — meaning uncertain, possibly 'subdued by El' or 'preserved by El' — asserts Judahite sovereignty over a strategically commanding site. The Valley of Salt (*Gei HaMelach*) is likely the Wadi el-Milh south of Be'er-Sheva. The parallel in 2 Chron. 25:11–12 describes the battle in greater and grimmer detail. FOG retains *Sela* and *Yokte'el* as transliterations; FOG Message uses the conventional English forms.
