He works from a personal encounter with Jesus first, then draws on the scholarship of respected Jewish and Christian scholars — because the church was Jewish before it was anything else, and those roots change everything about how you read Scripture.

The Hebrew *omnim* (guardians/tutors/foster-fathers) refers to those entrusted with the upbringing and protection of royal children — a position of both intimacy and political power. The word can also carry the sense of 'nursing fathers' (cf. Num. 11:12), emphasising a relationship of dependence and trust. These men in Samaria literally held the future of the dynasty. Both FOG and FOG Message render it 'guardians,' preserving this dual weight of protection and responsibility.
