Footnotes
The present participle ἐρχόμενον ('coming') is the crux of the verse. In 1 John 4:2, the perfect participle ἐληλυθότα is used ('having come'), pointing clearly to the accomplished Incarnation. The present form here carries multiple possibilities: (1) the Messiah's ongoing embodied existence confessed in the present—a direct anti-Docetic claim; (2) a present tense used loosely for a past event; or (3) a forward reference to the second coming in a body. The F.O.G renders 'as coming in the flesh,' preserving the ongoing confessional weight; the F.O.G Message's emphasis on active refusal to confess draws out the anti-Docetic thrust that runs throughout the Johannine letters.
