This verse is the theological pivot of the Amon account. The key term is again *kana'* (humble/submit) — the same word used of Manasseh's repentance in verses 12 and 19. Amon inherits his father's sin but not his father's *teshuvah* (turning). The phrase *hirbah 'ashmah* (multiplied guilt/compounded trespass) uses the noun *'ashmah*, which carries the specific weight of culpability that demands atoning action. Without *kana'* there is no restoration; Amon's two-year reign ends in assassination rather than return from exile. Chronicles uses this contrast to make a pastoral point: the path back from sin is always available (as Manasseh proves), but it requires the posture of humility that Amon refuses. FOG renders 'multiplied guilt'; FOG Message uses 'compounded his guilt — trespass heaped upon trespass' to make the accumulative weight visceral.
