The height of thirty-five cubits here differs from the eighteen cubits of 1 Kings 7:15, which has long exercised commentators. The most widely accepted solution is that Chronicles gives the combined measurement of shaft and capital together, while Kings measures the shaft alone — or the two accounts use different baseline points. The צֶּפֶת (tsefet, 'capital/crown') — called כֹּתֶרֶת (koteret) in 1 Kings — was an ornate crown adorned with lily-work and pomegranates. Crucially, these were free-standing pillars, not structural supports; they functioned as sacred steles or victory monuments, framing the Temple entrance as a declaration of covenantal and royal power. FOG renders the measurement plainly; FOG Message uses 'towering' to convey their monumental visual impact.
