King Achaz/Ahaz's reign (2 Chr. 28) was marked by systematic desecration: he shut the Temple doors, dismantled its furnishings, and installed Assyrian altars in its place. The restored vessels now standing 'before the altar' form a powerful counter-image — what apostasy scattered, repentance consecrates and restores. The key word for his failure is *ma'al* (מַעַל), covenant treachery, the same term used of Saul's fatal breach and of Israel's exile (1 Chr. 10:13; 2 Chr. 36:14). FOG uses 'discarded' and 'faithlessness'; FOG Message sharpens the contrast — 'cast aside' and 'unfaithfulness.'
