The Hebrew *midrash* (מִדְרַשׁ) — appearing here in one of its earliest biblical occurrences — means an inquiry, an exposition, a searching-out of meaning from a text or event. It is far richer than the generic "story" (NRSV) or "annotations" (NIV). In later Jewish usage, *midrash* denotes a mode of interpretive literature that draws out the deeper significance of sacred events and texts. The Chronicler's appeal to the *midrash* of Iddo implies that prophetic interpretation — not merely chronicle — stands behind his account: this is theology dressed as history. FOG retains the Hebrew term *midrash* to honour its technical and cultural weight; FOG Message renders it "commentary" to convey its expository character to English readers.
