Oikodespotein is a compound of oikos (house) and despotēs (master/lord) — the same root as 'despot.' This is not passive household management but active household lordship. The word grants the wife genuine authority and responsibility over the domestic sphere. The FOG uses 'manage their households' to stay close to the compound's literal sense; the FOG Message uses 'run their households' to convey the vigour and agency in view.
