The Greek γραώδεις (graōdeis) literally means "characteristic of old women" — a stock Hellenistic insult for credulity and superstition. The F.O.G renders "old-womanish" to preserve the cultural edge and its dismissive force; the F.O.G Message uses "silly" to capture the tone of contempt without importing the now-jarring sexist-ageist freight, though both lose something of the ancient social scorn.
