Footnotes
ἐνέκοψεν (enekopsen) = "cut into, blocked"—from ἐγκόπτω (enkoptō), the image of cutting into a road to render it impassable, a recognised military tactic. σατανᾶς (Satanas) is the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew שָׂטָן (śāṭān), "the Adversary/Accuser." F.O.G. renders it "the Adversary" to preserve the functional meaning of the name; F.O.G. Message retains "Satan" as the conventional English form. ἅπαξ καὶ δίς = "once and twice"—a Greek and Hebrew idiom (cf. Philippians 4:16) for repeated attempts; both translations render the idiom rather than the literal count.
