The verb *vayakhel* (וַיָּחֶל) is often rendered flatly as 'he was wounded,' but its root (*khul*) carries the sense of writhing, trembling, or the anguish of birth-pangs. The narrator is not merely reporting an injury but showing us Sha'ul in acute, twisting agony — a detail that makes his request in the next verse entirely human and sympathetic.
