The battle spans 'from dusk until the evening of the next day'—approximately eighteen to twenty-four hours of sustained combat, an extraordinary feat for men already exhausted by a three-day march and devastated by grief. The four hundred who escape on camels are beyond David's reach, but the narrative presents this without anxiety: the divine promise of verse 8 is fulfilled in spite of their flight.
