The Kereti (Kerethites) are likely Cretan mercenaries or a Philistine-affiliated people—and they later form part of David's own elite royal guard (2 Sam. 8:18), making this raid on their territory a detail of quiet irony. The Negev of Caleb refers to the clan inheritance in the southern highlands (Josh. 15:13). The scope of the Amalekite operation—cutting across Philistine, Judahite, and Calebite territories simultaneously—signals a large-scale, organised campaign.
