*Mar'eh* (vision/appearance), from the root *ra'ah* (to see), is the word used for what Shmu'el received—the same word used for prophetic visions and divine appearances throughout the Hebrew Bible (Gen 46:2; Ezek 1:1). The fact that he performs his morning duties—opening the sanctuary doors—before addressing what happened speaks to his faithful character and the weight of his fear. FOG retains 'vision' precisely; FOG Message adds 'what he had seen' to connect the visual root meaning and ground the reader in Samuel's point of view.
