*Meqalelim lahem* is textually complex. The Masoretic Text reads *lahem* ('for/upon themselves'), a scribal softening known as a *tiqqun soferim* (scribal correction), used to avoid writing 'blaspheming God' directly. The LXX and the Dead Sea Scrolls (4QSam) read *Elohim*—'his sons were blaspheming God.' FOG follows the euphemistic MT ('bringing a curse upon themselves') while preserving the underlying force; FOG Message restores the more direct reading. *Lo kihah bam* means he did not rebuke or restrain them—*kihah* implies the sharp, corrective word of a father or authority. Eli spoke (2:23-24) but did not act, and that passivity sealed his family's fate.
